artnet.com Big, excellent, site. If you know an artist's name and want to find information about them this is the first place to look. Mostly better known, gallery represented artists. ••••
floridaartistsregistry.com Excellent resource for artists, galleries, museums, etc. in Florida. ••••
artseensoho.com Before this great New York art scene site stopped updating (early 2000, appx) I used to visit here about once a week. It's only archives now, but so long as it exists, I highly recommend it. A great place to see many of the hot artists in their NY shows. •••
artincontext.org Excellent database of both well-known and lesser-known artists. Links to exhibitions, museums, dealers and (in most cases) images. ••••
broadartfoundation.org Listing of contemporary artists represented in the famous Broad Collection. Many include images. Worth a look. •••
eyestorm.com Excellent contemporary art site. Mostly photography and prints. Now touting the addition of the Saatchi Collection. Worth a long look. ••••
fine-art.com Fine-art.com is one of those large art database sites that has a good mix of art styles and an excellent search engine, but for some reason I don't go there very often. Still you might like it. ••
guild.com Like the site above, Guild.com keeps getting better, but for contemporary artists, it falls short. ••
newnyart.com A small NY art site dedicated to a handful of 'trendy' artists. Considering this is supposed to be cutting edge, it's amazing how poorly designed the site is. •
nextmonet.com One of the best, most diverse, large databases of emerging artists. Excellent mix of styles. Plus lots of other links and features for artists and collectors. One of my favorites when I just want to browse. ••••
onenest.com A good database site for arts and crafts and artifacts. Great site if you are looking for general gift items. ••
paintingsdirect.com Average art database, excellent search engine, mostly emerging artists. ••
paintings-directory.com 10,000 paintings on the web, an excellent database in english and french. •••
risingartist.com Pretty good database of emerging artists. Easy to navigate. ••
circline.com Nice database art/antique site. Excellent search engine makes lots of options available. Worth a closer look. ••••
artloop.com Claims to be 'your art consultant', a large database art site that I found a little difficult to navigate. Never really found a good collection of contemporary art, but the dictionary feature is nice. ••
artfulstyle.com Excellent database of lesser known, emerging artists. Great search engine makes selection easy. ••••
itheo.com Average art database of mainly emerging artists. ••
Auction Sites
christies.com One of the best known auctioneers is also one of the best. •••
ebay.com Ebay, the big daddy of on-line auction houses goes 'artsy', and does a pretty good job of it. •••
icollector.com Icollector is one of the lesser known auction sites, but they are coming on strong. ••
sothebys.com Another of the great old auction houses moves on-line and does an excellent job. •••
Artists Resources
artdeadline.com One of the original artist opportunity lists of competition deadlines, grants, etc. If artists didn't have to pay for this (it's bad enough we have to pay entry fees to competitions) it would be a great resource. •
artmarketing.com Books, mailing lists and a variety of other resources for professional artists, mainly to help them market their work. ••
artresources.com Excellent list of museums, the rest is average art database stuff. ••
mitchellgraphics.com A leading printer of postcards and other artists marketing materials. •••
theartbiz.com Used to be an excellent resource for the working artist...when it was free! Unfortunately they now charge for the use of the site. •
wwar.com World Wide Arts Resource, an excellent general purpose artists resource site. •••
xensei Extensive list of resources for the artist, assembled by the author of the ArtDeadline site. Very good. •••
Business and Promotion
bizbellsouth.net If you want to get on line with a good solid ISP to host your web site, it's hard to do better than mama. Ma Bell that is. Even though there are tons of people doing the internet ISP hosting gig, I still like the idea of using someone who won't go out of business next week or merge with another company. Check out Bell South. •••
1x.com Chris Maher has been advising artists on how to get on the web and promote themselves for years. His web site is about the best there is for loads of great information for novice and pro alike. In fact anyone using the web would benefit from this web site. ••••
workingartist.com Business software for the artist. Excellent software (but I wish they would make a Mac only version). This Windows based software is great, but if you work on a Mac you will have to run the software through one of the conversion programs like Virtual PC. Still, with so few business programs (reasonably priced) for the artist, this one is certainly worth a closer look. •••
Some of My Favorite Contemporary Galleries
luhringaugustine.com Great site, nicely designed, excellent artists. I come here often and recommend it highly. ••••
gagosian.com Another excellent site from the huge Gagosian Gallery. Superb design, navigation, art and artists. A regular on my frequent visit list. ••••
Magazines on Line
artforum.com If you like the magazine you'll like the web site. ••
General Search Sites
anywho.com Need to find a phone number, name or address? This is the place to start. ••••
webinfosearch.net A truly powerful search engine that will whisk through lots of other search engines to find whatever you're looking for. I use this one all the time! ••••
top10links.com Want to know which art gallery sites get the most hits (traffic)? This site offers a ranking of the top 10 in a wide variety of categories from Health and Fitness to Galleries and News. ••••
mapsonus.switchboard.com Trying to find a gallery, restaurant or artist's studio? Don't leave home without a map. I use this site all the time, it's great! ••••
Supplies
taxidermy.com Need eyeballs for your next project? How about a tongue? I love this stuff, a site dedicated to taxidermy supplies that can add that oh-so-real look that you just have to have. ••••
hudsonhighland.com High quality hard panels for painting with a variety of surfaces in a wide variety of sizes. ••
home.earthlink.net~pionsa/transfix.html 35mm slide labels for artists who (for whatever reason) can't seem to figure out how to make their own slide labels. •
dwr.com Need an artsy chair or funky lamp? Design Within Reach just might be your site. Nicely designed site and beautiful designer furnishings to make your home or studio flash. But even though they act like this stuff is dirt cheap, I still think it's a bit pricey. •••
Idea Exchanges, Art Community and Critique
miamiartexchange.com Local Miami art scene web site. Good grass roots effort to pull the South Florida art scene together for critiques and exchange of ideas. ••
newcrit.com An excellent site with superb reviews and commentary without the usual 'artspeak'. One of my favorite sites. ••••
Some of My Favorite Artists
Emily Kngwarreye The absolute best Aboriginal artist and one of the best artists anywhere. Can you tell I love this lady. Look at her work and tell me she didn't influence some of our current contemporary artists (Terry Winters, Brice Marden?).
